It was scary but I did not also learn to be more aware of my financial literacy. All I knew when I was to make more and more money. But know what you do not really need a big amount of money before you finally become financially literate.
The average income per annum of a young professional in the Philippines is Php 250,000 or $5000. Given that yearly you are getting 10% salary increase, a young professional can expect Php 366,000 or $7320 annual income by 2020.
Sad reality, Php 30,000 in 2020 is not enough to feed a family. According to CNN Philippines, to live comfortably in the Philippines a family of 3 members need a household income of Php 100,000 monthly.
Millennials are actively looking for ways to increase their income potentials or to speed up their success. Here’s the truth about it.
1. Network Marketing, this industry is over promising – BIG MISTAKE! People expect to earn big in the industry without exerting Effort. It can over deliver an under-promise result but you need to be consistent in the next 2-5 years. I personally LOVE this.
2. Stock Market. OVER PROMISING and VERY RISKY! You can lose huge amount of money in an instant but you can also earn big instantly. Still this is a very good vehicle for long term growth. Your gain is proportional to the investment. IF you are lucky – Php 10,000 can grow 10%, 20% or even 200% but if you can only invest a small amount 200% of Php 10,000 is 20,000(this is rare but possible) or in 5 years. I also invest in stocks.
3. Real Estate, I did my math – If I buy a Php 5,000,000 property in 2017, can I sell this in 2020 at Php 8,000,000-10,000,000? No, mostly likely it is still newly endorsed. But long term – it can be promising as well.
4. Digital Marketing – Massive social media movement of branding, selling, sharing, value creation or even creating a sales team to talk about a product, use the product, develop a product and be paid in commission, royalty or equity – THIS IS AS PHENOMENAL.
Bottom line, it’s takes time to grow a tree so thus harvesting it’s fruit. But their are huge potentials around you today.
In the world where we get so much distractions, a world where gold fish has better attention and focus than us – time management is a necessity.
Here’s how I do it as a millennial.
In order for me to finish small or medium task at a time I will have a cup of tea or coffee beside me. The closer I get to finishing my tea or coffee the closer should I finish the task.
Giving the mindset that one task at a time gives me power to focus and create better result.
One cup of coffee to finish;
– a lovely conversation
– write an article or 2
– connecting with customers
– finding new customers online
– connecting to family or friend
– creating your 6-12 months action plans
– evaluating your progress

When I first heard about the Holland Codes, I was intrigue with each personality types thus I decided to use it in working with the diverse personalities around me. Understanding more about the six different personality types can be beneficial in running your business or organization.
R: Doers (Realistic)
People with this main characteristics are independent, stable, persistent, practical, down-to-earth, physical, athletic, or mechanical. They can and think straight and they don’t hesitate before doing something.
They are the sales people, people who love to have fun at NOW habit.
I: Thinkers (Investigative)
People with the main type of thinkers are intellectual, curious, methodical, rational, analytical, and logical.
They want to know a lot about the world around them and are good in thinking first before making any decision. They love to solve problems and investigate before reacting.
Accountant, Engineers, Doctors, Mathematicians and IT professionals are the usual group of professional who are in this personality type.
A: Creators (Artistic)
People of this type are creative, intuitive, sensitive, expressive, unstructured, original, nonconforming, and innovative, spontaneous and open-minded.
They are keen to create something new, something beautiful and have an impact of many people’s minds with their creations.
Animators, Artist, Writers and Painters are some of the people in this group. The want to express themselves and they cannot be keep with specific standards.
S: Helpers (Social)
This type of people are kind, generous, cooperative, patient, caring, helpful, empathetic, and friendly. They find it important to help people and they value work with others a lot.
For helpers, money is not their motivation but charity and service to others.
Nurses, caregivers and teachers are in this group.
E: Persuaders (Enterprising)
People who have a stronger feature of this type are adventurous, ambitious, assertive, confident, extroverted, energetic, enthusiastic, optimistic, dominant, persuasive, and motivational.
They become good leaders, they are good in engaging with people and inspiring them to follow them. They are not afraid of taking risks and playing the main role in what they do.
This is the DNA of entrepreneurs, politicians, physical therapist and even bartenders.
C: Organizers (Conventional)
This type of people are the people who are logical, efficient, well-organized, thorough, and detail-oriented.
They are careful and like to give structure to what they do. Practical tasks, quantitative measurements, and structured environments are the fields they are very good at.
Your boss, some CEO’s/managers could be on this group.
You could have 2 or 3 or any combination of these personality types. You are normal and they are too. So the next time you meet someone instead of judging them or disagreeing with them ASK – is it his/her intention to behave this way or it’s just naturally his/her personality?

Your friends are very active in posting and sharing about their next travel destinations. Their inspirations in Europe or their adventure in Southeast Asia. It looks very inviting and made you think about your personal goals in life. What is really the reason of most millennials in creating their own path to discovery over settling down?
I was 24 when I first worked abroad. I stayed in Singapore and worked in hotel, 2 years later I quit my job as a manager to work full-time in my business. I decided to move to Indonesia where I met few people doing online job but mostly on their own startup projects.
When I started out on my personal journey it was a risk, I had few back up plans just in case my attempts will not succeed. Within the past 3 years I have met people gave up their corporate career for a one way ticket. Here are the reasons we share;
Living and Discovering Life’s Meaning
Getting married or having promotion at work is no longer the primary goal of millennials. We tend to hold it for a purpose of seeking new knowledge. University books are never enough for us but going to places and seeing how people live, laugh and breath is what we want. We are a generation who want to experience the world first-hand.
We try to avoid making commitments at home because we want to fully get the chance to integrate to the next country or society we will be living in. Finding a job is an option to support us while others chose to work online so they have the freedom to work at their working convenience.
Compared to the generations before us we have expanded our marketplace thus making us grow our ideas of doing a business. We think global and we love to compete in a bigger marketplace.
We are becoming more open minded and welcoming ideas from other entrepreneurs from other cultures. It excites us to do business with multi-cultural environment. Solving a small community problem is no longer the business of our generation but we are trying to make the world our consumers. We want to dominate a bigger marketplace and reach a bigger audience.
New Work Ethics
Living overseas or with diversity allows us to develop new work ethics. We are trying to cope up with the innovations in the internet in order to be part of its growing success. We are becoming multi-taskers who are needing flexibility in our tasks.
Millennials have different work ethics now than the previous generations. For us, it is less important to have a nine to five job and having the freedom to sustain our lifestyle is the new standards. Regardless of having or not having a real office to work.
For example, I do coaching for a marketing company. I consider Starbucks as my office to do trainings and meetings. I organize my own recognition and award program with my marketing team, sometimes our top seller incentive is a Royal Caribbean Cruising experience for a week. I communicate with my sales team through WhatsApp and at times I conduct trainings through Facebook Lives. We also have shared folder like a normal office but we use Box or Dropbox now.
I do not attend BNI groups or Rotary Club to network. But millennials join events organized through meetups.com or expat.com and even find new contacts through dating if not social media apps.
Easier To Find a Job or Business Partnership
The good thing with the millennials is the adaptability. They can easily adjust to new environment and they are driven to win and prove themselves. Though some are leaving the corporate world there are other millennials that are doing well in a new country that they are moving to.
It is easier for them to find a job or even business partnership bringing the knowledge and work experience they have from their home country. Once a millennial choose to work or stay in that country it is when he/she can tell that the self discovery is starting to be found.
Realizing that they do not need to search themselves but they have to create it and moving to places is where it becomes a possibility.
It’s easier than ever before with technology. We live in an age where it is possible to connect with people and companies around the world within seconds. The fear of moving abroad can be virtually eliminated by lining up a position ahead of time, communicating with fellow expats, and exploring where you plan to move; all while over your morning coffee.
Millennials may appear complicated but they are not. Yes they have so many ideas or maybe less focus as others judged them to be but they are not. Millennials are looking for an environment where they can practice their gift and be them without being judged.
They want to be understood and accepted. They believe that they have ideas but their ideas are sometimes questioned before it is heard. So they go somewhere people are more open-minded or with like-minded individual.
Wait? Retire? I cannot think of best word to use in writing this article but yes millennials don’t start thinking about retirement at age 30 or 40, they start to prepare as early as possible. Older generations might think that millennials are not responsible or they are having too much fun but I would disagree with that idea.
While millennials are employed some might think of staying in the same company for the next 20 years in order to get the top position but majority are on their goals of preparing for their resignation in the next 2-5 years.
They know that even if they live to be with an extraordinarily frugal lifestyle, Social Security benefits alone won’t be enough to sustain their lifestyle. They love to read and learn about ways to increase their chance of quitting their jobs.
Millennials love to embrace new challenge. For them the most exciting life is to have sometime new. They do not see themselves being locked inside the box but to be exploring outside the box.
The earlier they can resign the more fulfilled they will be and they use it as great story in their next adventure for a startup, to write their books, start their blogs, travel the globe or participate in improving the lives of others.
Many young professionals today are driven to solve the problems in their community. They love to explore for new ways or create somthing that the world have never seen or heard. The more unique the can become the prouder they will be.
It’s becoming a competition of creating the biggest contribution.
